Records tell us that Miruksa in Iksan-gun, Chollabuk-do Province was a temple of great magnitude founded in the seventh century during the reign of Mu-wang of Paekche. A recent excavation of the temple revealed much about its overall layout. Three sets of structures, each consisting of a gate, a pagoda and a kumdang, or a layout that has never been seen anywhere before. The pagoda at the center was wooden, while the ones in the east and west sections were stone. Except for a badly damaged stone pagoda in the west section, all that remain of the temple are some plinths and foundations of the buildings. the original form of the pagoda is not known as only the six stories are extant. The excavation and measurements of the various structural parts, however, revealed that the pagoda was actually nine stories high, not seven as previously thought. The study also led to the development of an entirely new concept regarding the elevation of the pagoda, that is, that the silhouette was not a straight diagonal line but was slightly convex. Another major discovery, made by studying the basic plan and modules of the temple layout, the size of the temple and the location of the gates of the east and west sections were determined by the diagonal of a square, a side of which equals the distance between the gate and the kumbang of the central section.
