This study is aimed at the provision of data on color planning by studying color preferences for high-rise apartment exteriors in urban areas. To understand color preferences for apartment exteriors, we has studied the following : First, classification of applicable color patterns to apartment exteriors. Second, analysis of preferences in color patterns. Third, understanding of images created by color patterns, using the semantic differential method. The results of this study are as follows : First, color patterns suitable for apartment exteriors can be classified into 10 categories, through preliminary study into color patterns and surveys of the current situation. Second, preferences in color patterns for apartments would be ranked as abstract super graphic, concrete super graphic and gradation technique, in descending sequence. Third, concerning images formed through color patterns, the most remarkable preferences for color patterns are for "modern" and "fresh" images. The subjects used in the color preference eperiments of this study were experimented with and studied on a perspective, applying computer graphics for images to similar to those on actual buildings. In this context, this study, as an approach to practical color planning, can contribute to color planning for apartment exteriors.
