This study proposes to contemplate the meaning of the
machine in relation to architecture, through the
interpretation of the "machine" and the analysis of the
concept of modern architecture accompanying it.
The "machine", both the product and the symbol of the
20th century's technological civilization, was to
architects the source of inspiration. Its attributes
influential to the formation of the concept of architecture
are these: the formal feature and the attribute of
production mechanism.
This study centers on the interpretation of the machine
as the acquisition of meaning, which is used a method of
examining the relationship between the machine and the
concept of architecture. From the 18th century architects
admired the utility of the machine and took it a precept
for them. With the 20th century's beginning, they interpreted
the "machine" as a whole embodiment of the 20th century's
Zeitgeist, so the industrial society's hero, the "machine",
became an ideological model of architecture.
As a result, the concept of architecture in relation to the
interpretation of the "machine" is fixed into four categories:
'metaphor', 'abstraction', 'rationality', 'image'.
