Sleep disturbance may be both a consequence of and a contributing factor for chronic pain such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, headache, and psychophysiological disorders. It is possible that depression secondary to chronic pain may explain the prevalence of sleep complaints among the patients with pain disorders.
This study was performed to investigate the sleep quality in the patients with TMD, and the effects of TMD treatment on sleep quality. For the study, 100 patients with TMD completed the PSQI questionnaire. Data from the questionnaire were analyzed statistically with SPSS windows program.

The obtained results were as follows :

1. The PSQI global score had mean of 7.40 before treatment, and mean of 4.82 after treatment. All the PSQI global score and component scores except for use of sleeping medication of pre-treatment were significantly higher than post-treatment(P<0.001). Daytime dysfunction score was the largest and the use of sleeping medication score was the smallest.
2. Pre-treatment subjective sleep quality(p<0.01), use of sleeping medication, and PSQI global score(p<0.05) in the patients with headache was significantly higher than the patients without headache. Pre-treatment habitual sleep efficiency in the patients with chief complaint for pain was significantly higher than the patients without chief complaint for pain(p<0.05).
3. Pre-treatment sleep disturbance of a chronic group was significantly higher than that of a acute group(P<0.05).
4. Pre-treatment PSQI global score in the patients with muscular disorders was significantly higher than the patients without muscular disorders(P<0.05). Pre-treatment sleep duration in the patients with tenderness in head and neck region was significantly higher than the patients without tenderness in head and neck(p<0.05).
5. There was significant correlation between pre-treatment PSQI score and pre-treatment SCL-90-R score except for obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, and paranoid ideation. Habitual sleep efficiency was most significantly correlated with SCL-90-R.
