I-Sang(李箱) is one of the most famous modern writers in modern Korean literature for his peculiar literary style. So, so many people of scholars who study on modern Korean literature have pitched themselves into the explanation for his writings. But his writings are still living wrapped in mystery.
This paper advances a hypothesis that I-Sang's writings are totally products of his game playing with signs, that is to say language. Needless to say, language is a system of meaning. Therefore his writings assuming the shape of poetic or novel are used to come in sight with the forms of non-sense because of his radical attitude to Literature. From this point of view, his writings can be characterized for 'the playing game with the signs' or that with the meanings.
His world view as a 'Homo Ludens' appears in the essay of the name of [Boredom], in this writing we can see why he were sunk in the depths of despair and what he was looking for. In a sentence we can say that he was looking for a art, a great art, a great masterpiece, but he could not make a masterpiece because he was not able to have enough time for his life, for his art. He had lung trouble, and finally he made himself a victim of disease of T.B. And, as he said early before about the life and art, he died early, but his artistry could live long.
It could not be said that a artist's thought should determine the price of his art, but anyway I-Sang worked in accordance with his thought that life is play, and art is play too. He borrowed this radical thought from Dadaism, but the more important thing is that he practiced this thought at the risk of his life. That's why his writings should live long. We can say finally that we, men of studies on modern Korean literature, can dance with his playing of sign game, that is, can play the interpretation game with his writings following his instructions.
