This is a study on the novels by Park, Si-Jung in the 1970s. The main themes of her works are the sense of alienation as a Korean that she had to feel over the thirty years' life in the USA on the one hand, and the identity crisis of the women intellectual from the experiences as housewife or mean laborer on the other. It is the context of the Korean literature in the 1970s that makes Park's novels worth special attention. In the 1970s' Korea the modernity was the prime goal of the country that no one could object, but still the retrospective and confined traditionalism was dominating people's mentality. Women intellectuals, therefore, were attracted to western individualism and women's liberation thoughts. Nevertheless, they had to face the problem of the national consciousness simultaneously. What Park, Si-jung is doing in her novels by questioning how 'American Dream' overlaps with the desire of women intellectuals' seeking 'self', the women's conflicting loyalties between the national pride as Korean and the individualistic equality in the West is, in fact, addressing the bold question of the relationship between Gender and Nation. It is true that she herself is not free from the simplistic dualism of nation/West, community/individualism, and patriarchy/feminism("Korean Doll"). Nevertheless, even now, her suggestion that the solidarity among minorities should be a solution to the alienating experiences as a minority woman offers a precious insight.
