The participating group in carrying out the Gahshin-year Coup d'etat was comprised of Sanghan(常漢) figures, and they were well aware of the Gaehwa/ 開化 philosophy thanks to the information and knowledge they had obtained through certain opportunities and visits to the outer world.
They were very eager to implement such philosophies through events in the real world. During the early stages, practical knowledge and technology, such as military skills, silk raising, Cowpox vaccination and English language were subjects that they were primarily interested in. Then after 1883, they started to consider independence and Gaehwa modernization as important and also urgent National tasks.
The participants of the Coup hoped that their action would turn the tides of the situation. They also thought that their actions were mirroring the conflict between Imperial Japan and the Chinese. They expected that the Coup itself would be labelled as a terrible one, and they would all be executed for their participation in such act. Yet they carried out the Coup nonetheless. And the leaders of the Coup included the requests and expectations of such participants in their subsequent personnel appointments and reformation program.
Based on their understanding of the Gaehwa philosophy, the participants of the Coup hoped for significant social reformation which would replace the existing order. The Gabshin-year Coup was not made possible solely because of the leaders and their leadership, but was made possible because of the hope and active action of many people who were determined to see the dawn of a new society.
