This study attempts to reflect on the interactions between economic development and political democracy in India over the past 50 years. The process of economic development is situated in the wider context of political democracy to explore the interaction between economics and politics in independent India. This study is divided into four phases in terms of economic and political characteristics.
The strategy of economic development was shaped by a political consensus and characterized by long-term perspective between 1947 and 1966. The strategy of economic development was given a statist orientation, epitomized in the phases "commanding heights of the economy and socialistic pattern of society. "
It was observed that 1967~1990 was characterized as a qualitative change in the interaction of economics and politics. Economic policies and economic development were influenced by the compulsions of political democracy.
The current phases started from the introduction of economic liberalization in 1991 is said that India moves from a quest for state-led capitalism to a world of market-driven capitalism. The economics of liberalization and politics of empowerment are moving the economy and the polity in opposite direction.
