In this study, I regarded the subject matters such as taoist magic, transformation, the wizard and the spirit etc, which appear in the classical novel as something fantastic and considered the relation between fantasy and mimesis as the creation principle of literature.
By the fantasy impulse and the mimesis impulse, literature is generated and the fantastic things which is expressed in classical novel are created by the fantasy impulse. In this study, I examined the fantasy of Barkseejeon which shows the relation like this quite well and considered about its social meaning.
We can classify the fantasy which consists Barkseejeon into the fantasy of character, the fantasy of the dramatic incident and the fantasy of the scene. The fantasy of character is showed by the grotesque appearance, the beautiful appearance and the superhuman ability of Ms. Bark. The fantasy of the dramatic incident is showed at the part that with Ms. Bark's superhuman ability our army defeat the army of Qing but this is not the true historic event.
The fantasy of the scene is the space in which the fantasy character and the fantasy incident is occur. The fantasy space-time is made up at the royal court in which the mimetic incident is happening or the Pihwadang which is opposed to the Namhan mountain fortress. The fantasy composing the Barkseejeon seems to be clearly opposed to the mimesis. The fantastic character, incident and scene opposed to the mimetic ones are that the most pressed desire of the disparaged of the Chosun Dynasty is expressed to the fantasy impulse.
In Barkseejeon, the pressed desire of women disparaged by the men and of the populace disparaged by the nobility of the Chosun Dynasty is expressed with something fantastic. The fantasy opposed to mimesis indicates the desire to subvert the society of the men and the nobility. The expression wishing to subvert the miserable reality to use fantasy is the place to which the pressed desire of the disparaged women and populace ejected.(Chungnam National University)
