JeongChim (正寢) is the usual residence where the proprietor leads his daily life and also ritual place for some
important ritual performances such as a part of wedding ceremony, national council and King's demise. From the
Confucian viewpoint, JeongChim has been understood as a kind of specified architectural form and the most
important element among those buildings composing whole complex. As time goes by, its dignity and own original
function had been kept up persistently but forms, influenced by life-style and constructional conditions, were
molded so diversely. At Joseon Dynasty, Pyeonjeon (便殿) like SaJeongJeon (思政殿) had the meaning of royal
JeongChim as ritual place though King's residential place was ChimJeon (寢殿). It means that the functions of
JeongChim were divided into two parts and because the traditional life-style of Joseon, such as using Ondol (溫突,
floor-heating system), differed from that of the ancient China.
In line with the spreading of Ondol and looseness of ritual norms, some roles of PyeonJeon had transferred to
other buildings. 'Returning to the inner place(還內)' cound not be set in SunJeongJeon (宣政殿) and MunJeongJeon (文
政殿) because there wasn't any room-type space separated with main hall. Moreover the place for
nighttime-meeting such as HeeJeongDang (熙政堂) had got leading role for unofficial audience instead of SangCham
(常參) at PyeonJeon. Especially the ritual for King's demise, one of the most important function, had never held at
PyeonJeon, and it had continuously weakened its reason for being. Under such conditions, the bisected concept of
JeongChim was getting combined to ChimJeon and it means that ritual-oriented spatial system had started to
decline and to give way to actual and practical convenience.
