In the 1920s and 1930s, modernity was introduced to Korean along with Japanese Imperialism. It worked not only as forces "modernizing" traditional ways of everyday lives but also as oppressing forces imperilling the ways of thinking on "self". This paper explores how the Koreans of those days accepted and reacted to the trends of modernity by analyzing the symbols of foods in some Korean modern novels. Food represents some cultures of the people who make personal relationships with others by making, providing, sharing and/or eating it. So it can be a significant indicator for revealing the ways of identifying 'self', making relationships with others, and constituting power structures. This article seeks to find out some rules implied in the symbols of food from some Korean modern novels, and to explain the meanings of deviatory and overthrowing trends shown in them. In several novels, the sign of food represents ordering and excluding forces: Who should get it and who may not have some access to it? In the era of scarcity, food was the main object of needs and wants which could not be fully satisfied. Some classification and segregation were inevitable to distribute these scarce resources. Patriarchal gender discrimination was an effective method for this purpose. Moreover, food as a sign of deviation and subversion is analyzed. Some novels identifY the eater with the eaten, describe eating out as portents of catastrophe, and satirize stealing foods, by which existing rules and norms are ridiculed, despised, and, in a limited sense, overrode by some other urgent needs such as survival. The 'body discourse' can be inserted into the signs of food, with which the otherness of the body is recognised and accepted. Ms. Kang's Novels show it : omnipresence of violence such as rape and homicide can be endured and overcome with so much more urgent needs of the body to survive. Kim, Yoojung's novels reveal different aspects of foods. Food was the main object of deviant behaviours such as begging, stealing, and prostitution. But the valuation of them is just sustained for good. Rather, these behaviours are absorbed into everyday lives which transform deviation into normality. The ethics of caring others can be reformed from these attitudes.
Amazingly, we can read out some critical and reflexive trends to the projects of modernity in the era of importing the modernity. Moderniry was not only imported to and imposed on Korean people's daily lives but also reinterpreted and reproduced in modern novels with a new meaning of caring others.
