Dynamometer is an instrument for measuring torque of ratating machines, such as engine and motor. Now a day, electric eddy current dynamometer is most widely used for easy torque control characteristics. The eddy current dynamometer uses the eddy current as a breaking force with excitation coil around dynamometer body. The excitation coil current controls velocity and retating resistance of the dynamometer body. The braking force of roter F is related with magnetic flux density (B) and current in rotor (I) and expressed as follows;
F=f(B, h, I)=K·f(Ia², N), where constant, K=f(n², r, R, A², Rm², h², D) (1)
The load cell or spring balance, which measures the twisting force of dynamometer body, is calibrated using the different weights at the end of standard length bar without dynamometer running. This method basically includes two disadvantages;1)the number of measuring points are limited and the accurate linearity measuring is difficult, 2)the dynamic error due to the sensor hysteresis is impossible to compensate because the load cell calibration is performed without dynamometer running.
We studied the relation between the loading force by eddy current and the breaking force. The verification method of the dynamic accuracy of twisting force measuring devices, using Equation (1), is suggested. It is linear relation between the braking force measured from the torque meter(load cell) and the multiply of shaft rmp by the square of excitation coil current (Ia²·N).
To prove this relation, it was experimented and showed that the torque generated by the rotating body can be measured using the shaft rpm and the excitation coil current of the eddy current dynamometer. This result implies that the torque of rotating body can be measured without measuring sensor, such as load cell. The conditions for improving the accuracy of the method are also suggested and discussed.
