Among Gang Sin-jae' s novels, which expressed affection morals between sexes intensely, while becoming a topic of conversation, I have examined his lyrical description techniques expressed in his novels, centering on Jeongsuni, a short novel that made him a debutant; Joolmeun Neutinamu, depicted an exceptional love affaires for the days; and Imjingangui Mindeulle, a full-length novel and written at the times of his conversion of novelistic genre into historical one. First of all, I have looked into the point of time of description with leongsuni, while mainly dealing with the securing of descriptive distance. The descriptive distance refers to a scheme with which he descrihes his novel while placing some distance hetween his novelistic characters and readers intentionally in order for the readers to secure objectivity. By comparing between 'Jeongsuni', a submissive character and 'Jeongok', a modern type one, he insists an objective expression, neither negating nor affirming them, thereby reserving the judgment on them for its readers. This type of descriptive techniques sublimate the state of description that can be easily flown into a popular style to a one level higher dimension. His intention is to secure the objectivity of affairs within a novel by excluding his subjectivity, and by not explaining nor evaluating. Namely, it is a means expressed to capture sensibility and the subtle aspect of emotion. Next, I have especially examined the function of lyrical image appeared in Jeolmeun Neutinamu, which was a focal point of debate among disputants. The function of image, which is usually expressed in poetry, plays a leading role in the image-making of themes in Gang Sin-jae's novels. Althougb Jeolmeun Neutinamu deals with the forbidden love between a brother and a sister by different motbers, it is sublimated into a pure love due to fresh images such as the sense of smell, sight, hearing, and so on. Especially, in this novel, the introduction of eighteen years old girl's pure sight make the description of. charaders dean and lovely. The novel's fresh images have much inHuence on the image-making of tbemes and become a leading image that Hows in all over the novel. Leading characters appeared in Gang Sin-jae' s novels are generally intelleetuals of the days, and idealistic type figures. Although such a character who becomes a kitchen maid or sacrifices himself or herself for his or her family is described as noble in lmjingangui Mindeulle, 'Iwha'. who lives her life with an ideal, is valued more. 'lwha', who was an applicant for a medical school, appears to be beautiful. with the looks of not losing her ideal even at the times of rlying. The dandelion in the Imjin River (mjingangui Mindeulle) is heroine Iwha's ideal and yearmng toward lives. This type of characters appears frequently in his novels. Although the post war days were miserable and devastated in terms of materials, Gang Sin-jae's novels sublimate such difficult issues that can easily be inclined to popular styles to one level higher atmosphere, by rlescribing with scrupulous strokes rlue to his sensitivity. His short and long novels written in 1950s-1960s were praiserl by mass communications of the day by means of expressing the yearning toward an idealistic and romantic worlrl, while creating the dominant atmosphere of remarkable sensitivity novels. It was time of chaos, but men of the day felt thirsty for an idealistic and romantic world. Some of his novels have expressed popular states of society, but as an intellectual and idealist he must be such a writer who deals with reality lyrically and with tactfully sensitive strokes, while revealing his ideal through the idealism of literary styles and characters between which he places some distance, by lyrically describing the sensitivity factor-'lyricism'-in his novels. I think we must take the meaning of these 'lyricism' into consideration with Gang Sin-jae's novels in the future.
