Anniversary of a baby's first birthday is a ceremony that has to be gone through to celebrate the first anniversary of a baby's birthday. The ceremony consists of such courses as rendering devotion, dressing up the baby, preparing foods for the ceremony, making the baby pick up anything it likes among different things like money, pencil, book, thread, etc., which are laid before it(hereinafter to be called as 'picking-up'), and so on. Every course of the ceremony is full of sincerity, confirming the baby is a member of a family as well as giving thanks to the nature. It is also a very important socialization procedure for the baby.
Followings are the findings on my inquiry about the actual state of today's anniversary of a baby's first birthday. As for the consciousness of the people inquired on the anniversary of a baby's first birthday, most of them(76.9%) think the celebration is necessary. And as for the meaning of the celebration, the inquiry item, 'To show that the baby has grown well', got the highest point. Concerning the 'picking-up', 86.3% answered 'yes', showing the consciousness that the family-related ceremony of 'picking-up' is regarded as more important than the external celebration ceremony itself. For the level of understanding about the traditional ceremony of anniversary of a baby's first birthday for each inquiry item, the findings are 80.8% for 'distributing the first birthday food(rice cake)', 77.7% for 'well-wishing remarks and giving presents', 50.2% for preparing foods for the ceremony", 42% for 'blessings for the first birthday' and 42% for 'rendering devotion'. The consciousness and actual state of anniversary of a baby's first birthday, and the level of understanding of the traditional anniversary of a baby's first birthday are all deeply connected with the 'mother'.
