The purpose of this study was to look into the functions and socioeconomic position of the medical doctors in Koryo Dynasty. Among their functions, as I have tried to show, may be included the health care for the royal family. medical checkup for the officials, gathering and preparation of the medicinal stuffs, supervision over the victuals and teas in the royal court, medical service in the war, keeping vigil for the king, and the condolatory calls.
The medical doctors, for their services as technical officers, were rewarded with upland field and forest for firewood(전시) and harvests(녹봉). While they were paid as much as the civil officials under the reign of Kyongjong, in Mokjong's reign their 'jonshi' was far less than either military or civil officials received. King Munjong, however, somewhat redressed their economic inequity by allowing them with adequate 'jonshi' usually given to the civil officials of the same ranking. Nevertheless they were relatively ill paid as compared with the military officials, who enjoyed sufficient financial rewards as the result of their reevaluated importance through those tumultuous years of war against 'Koran' tribes. On
the other hand their 'nokbong' was always inferior to that of other civil officials. Therefore it can be said that medical officials had suffered economic inequity unlike other civil or military officers.
Medical officers were recruited and appointed in principle only through state examinations such as 'iup' and 'jukmup'. The medical career was in theory open to all the commoners but, medicine being a profession requiring several years of arduous study, medical doctors carne mainly from 'hyangri' class, especially 'hojang' class and noble families, and used to succeed the hereditary profession. But in later Koryo Dynasty, some civil officers were sometimes appointed as medical doctors. They could be promoted to the position of the highest rank after more than ten years of service, and it was their ability and achievement that determined their promotion. Sometimes they were advanced into the civil service. Nevertheless, they were more often than not treated as a medical doctor. And some medical doctors were promoted even to the highest position of prime ministers. These exceptional cases, very often found in later years of Koryo Dynasty, were made possible through king's favors or remarkable exploits in the period of political turmoil. In later Koryo Dynasty, some medical officers were created vassals of merit and deeply involved in contemporary politics. This could be taken as a reflection of the improved social status medical officers did not enjoy in the earlier years of Koryo Dynasty. But this can also be accounted for by the frequent foreign invasions, inordinate creations of peers, and political turmoil at that time.
