The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the poetic viewpoint of Kim Kwang-Kyun[김광균] on lylic poetry. Kim Kwang-Kyun wrote the thesis The Problem of Lylic Poetry[서정시의 문제] at The Humanities Critics[인문평론] (1940.2), It was the new generation discussion of poetry, which had much to do with 'The New Generation Argument' at that time. Naturally, he criticized old generation's poetry and asserted justification and property of new poetry in the thesis. Then, it is this that we are interested in Kim's writing, at there he emphasized on 'contents and continer[내용과 용기]', 'the ideas of form[형태의 사상성]'. He thought that these were the paradigm of new poetry. His argument had something to do with the debate Kim Dong-Suk at 'Liberty Space [해방공간]' as well as instituted a perspective on the problem 'actuality' in Modernism Poetry. Kim distinguished 'the Twentieth century' from 'the nineteenth century'. He thought that this distinction was valued above everything else in 1930s' poetry. It was a criterion which confirmed 'the modernity' of modem poetry. Then Kim Ki-Kim and Lee Sang sticked to this 'the 19th century', too. At that time Kim Kwang-Kyun claimed 'new lylic poetry'. but it was 'urban lylic' rather than lylic style. For him, the lylicism was an emotion and a sensibility. He regarded 'the 20th century' as 'the Polish tragedy'. 'tired urban scenery' and 'estrangment of modern human' to distinguish 'the 20th century' from 'the 19th century'. And he argued that modern poetry must discovered modem value from these. He set a high value on 'reality' of poetry, which was not the natural reality of traditional lylicism but the urban reality of modern poetry. He stipulated that the urban reality was contents of modern poetry and contents of poetry was changed. He thought that, therefore, modern poetry which was container of poetry was changed, too.
At first appearance, his argument is a kind of formalism. But it ultmately implies not only the category of language and thinking in modem poetry but also justific ontology of the new generation discussion. By analogizing this with 'modernity' of modern poetry, we can reach a conclusion this following. It signifies the change of thinking category and language category according to the change of actual life, the urban life. In other Words, as life style (urban life) is changed, the horizon of a thinking and a idea is changed, therefore signal system (form of poetry) which contains the life is changed.
Till now, the studies on Kim Kwang-Kyun have paid attention to his poem's imagery or urban lylicism. But I take a notice of his language consciousness and the category of 'ideas of form'. ] think that urban lylicism does not the materal. For Kim's, Imagism or the visual imagery, the pating's peculliarity of his poetry is not out of the question. Above all, he thought of the fate of modern poetry, which was only out of question. I also question that Kim's thinking and writing, a view of language on modem poetry. My studies on poetic language will be continued to other poets, for examples, Jung Ji-Yong, Lee Sang, Kim Chun-Su, Kim Su-Young, etc. Their concerns on language of modern poetry are a key point to make researches in the modernity of modern poetry. Kim Kwang-Kyun is being at the head of my studies.
