In the field of modern Korean literature, modern Sijo is perhaps one of the least discussed literary genres. Scholars of Korean literature, regardless their specialties are on the classic or on the modern, rarely include poetry of modern Sijo. As Min Byung-Gi puts it, the scholars of classic literature rarely touch upon the genre for the reason the works belong not to classics but to modern literature, while the scholars of modern Korean literature avoid the genre for the reason the works inherit the' old' and' dead' form of Sijo that prospered during the past Cho-Sun era.
This paper argues modern Sijo poets continued to refine the' old' form of sijo in order to make it to be able to represent all aspects of the lives of contemporary Korean people. Thus, even while Sijo has been rarely explicated in academia, numerous good Sijo poets produced glowing literary works of Sijo. Among the modern Korean Sijo poets, those who began their literary careers in the 1960's stand out: their entrance to the field of creative writing was through tough competitions, many of them began to make literary circles and the majority of them became prolific poets. Jae-Doo Park, whose pen name is Woon-Cho, is one of them. Although he published only one volume of collected poems, under the title of 'design of floating cloud and lotus flower', throughout his entire life, he won more than 6 major Sijo awards, which speaks to the excellence of his Sijo works.
This paper asks first of all why Park wrote his poems in less- acknowledged Sijo form while he was fully competent of writing so-called 'free poem'. By examining his essay about the relationship between the specificity of Korean language and the literary form of Sijo and some interviews he had, I found out he regarded Sijo the most adequate literary form in which Koreans could express their thoughts and feelings better than in any other genre. The confinement of the number of letters Sijo requires, according to him, functions best to express the natural flow and rhythm of Korean language, far from limiting them.
Sijo, which is a genre of terse and frugal language, is intimately related with Park's philosophy of and attitude toward life. His literary world, which can be summarized as yearning for knowledge, admiration of nature, splendor of longing and sympathy toward the powerless and virtuous, was the direct reflection of his way of life.
By explicating his view on Sijo and the literary world of his Sijo, this paper concludes that modern Sijo is more refined than known to the public. Thus, to provide modern Sijo with appropriate space in the field of modern Korean literature it deserves, I conclude, will only enlarge and enrich the field.
