This paper examines the meaning of space background manifested in Unyoungjeon, a classical novel written in Chinese. Even though there are many background elements in this novel, space background plays an important role for readers to understand the meanings of this novel.
I have divided the space background into three different ones: a space for Yoo-Young's coming into and out of a dream, an inner space of Soo-Sung Court, and an outer space of Soo-Sung Court. The reason for this is because this novel shows a narrative focusing on Soo-Sung Court where a royal prince Ahn Pyung lives.
The space for coming into and out of a dream indicates a double meaning both of heaven and earth. The inner space of Soo-Sung Court becomes meaningful as a space for love conflicts and against the absolute authority of monarchy. This is a space for perceiving
reality and actualizing love and also becomes a space that is changing, depending on the conflicting relationships among Un-Young, prince Ahn Pyung, and Jinsa Kim (Jinsa is a title for a person who has passed the primary state examination). The outer
space of Soo-Sung Court shows social reality and implicates the meaning of the space where conflicts against the absolute authority of monarchy can be avoided and dead Un-Young's grudge can be paid off.(Paichai University)
