This thesis aims to examine whether Christianity can fulfill the role of public religion by analysing the communal characteristics of small groups within the church. In recent years, rather than focusing on the members, the church had greater interests in growth, resulting in a loss of its communal characteristics. As members lose their identity as individuals within these large churches, small groups serve as a haven from the alienation that results and provide the closeness sought after by these members. Small group members form a sense of group consciousness and solidarity, and thus a feeling of trust in a society that is often described as ambiguous. Nor only is the church recovering its communal characteristics through the practice of small groups, it is also gaining a form of social capital through the networks and relationships formed by members of small groups.
By taking a sociological view point, this thesis argues that an increase in social interactions is the reason that small groups emit such characteristics. That is, communal characteristics are formed through small scale face-to-face interactions that lead to trust within the group. It is important to. note that religious. activities within the small group are moving from the private sphere to the public. Modern society reduces
religious practices to the individual level, but small groups by nature are communal and therefore, religious activities performed by small groups have now moved to the public level. Small groups are an important topic in sociology because they serve as support groups and networks, and
because the relationships formed within these groups serve as social capital necessary to participate in civil organizations.
