Due to the growing usage of the large size transformers, electric motors, non-linear loads and rectifiers, the power quality has been an important issue. Since the power quality problems generate lots of economic losses, a great deal of research has been conducted to improve the power quality. The dynamic voltage compensation system (DVCS) is a kind of series compensator, which can instantaneously compensate the voltage variation. However, it also has a disadvantage that it can cause the large voltage spike at the initial operation and the large in-rush current due to the matching transformer saturation. In this paper, a new control scheme for the DVCS to improve the power quality is introduced. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme has been verified by the computer simulation as well as the experiment. Since the proposed algorithm only requires one additional current sensor, it dose not increase the system cost. In results, voltage spike and the large in-rush current to the transformer has been reduced si nificantly and the system shows the good performance in compensating the voltage variation.
