This study is started from two questions, “Why is the general Ko Seonji was a man of Koguryo?” and “In what part was he a great man?” To study this topic, 3 novels about history of Koguryo are studied in this paper.
First, ‘how the three novels are describing Ko Seonji and whether the description in the novels coincides with historical facts’ were contemplated. Northern road of Mountain Tianshan by Yoo Hyunjong is focused on making hero of general Ko Seonji as a nationalist, diminishing achievement by other people around Ko. Otherwise, in Light of Dunhuang by Hwang Inkyung, main character is an imaginary man and fate of various nations and characters is crossing. And Ko Seonji is observed in the middle of the crossing. Though historical facts are quite well studied in Tiger of Pamir by Kim Yongbum, readers are not fully stimulated to exercise their imagination with the novel.
Second, all of the 3 novel reveals some limitation in describing Ko Seonji as a national hero. In Northern road of Tianshan, Ko is still fighting against Manchurians with Sinocentrism. General Ko’s last moment was not suitable as a national hero in Light of Dunhuang. And in the Tiger of Pamir Ko’s outstanding achievement is devaluated as his subordinate Bong Sangcheong’s works are emphasized. Even in his last scene, his responsibility only as a Chinese commander is stressed.
Third, how the each novel evaluates significance of Ko’s expedition in Asia’s geopolitical aspect in the Silk Road era and in the world history is studied. In the Northern road of Tianshan, written with nationalistic point of view, the author repeatedly explains only about geopolitics in that era and emphasizes a historical fact that defeat of the Talas war contributed spread of paper manufacture skill to the West. The novel failed to describe Ko’s work effectively in form of epic. In the Tiger of Pamir, it is also hard to find exquisite description of Ko’s work. However, the Light of Dunhuang by Hwang, successfully makes readers to ponder about history of the Silk Road and fate of nations around China not with the view of Sinocetrism but with the view of lesser nations.
