A two-state Markov chain model for VBR video sources is proposed in this paper, and a number of parameters from the model are used to the application of adaptive bandwidth allocation. The model has an advantage to be used for a general arrival process. Three different schemes of estimating the "effective bandwidth" based on our traffic parameters have been presented, and the performance of these schemes are compared for both homogeneous and heterogeneous mix of traffic. Our simulation shows that the new adaptive bandwidth allocation schemes outperform the other schemes such as the static allocation or low-pass filter allocation.
