In this paper, we propose a method of estimating the buffer capacity required to guarantee both the cell loss and delay in large scale ATM networks. The main idea is to establish a method of computing the buffer size from the measured source traffic data represented by mean rate and its variance in large scale ATM networks where the parametric approach does not give any implication to the system performances. First, we consider the problem of estimating the QoS (Quality of Service) measures from the statistical viewpoint such that both the probabilities of cell loss due to buffer overflow and the cell delay do not exceed target values. Next, we formulate the problem by large deviation context and obtain an explicit formula for the required buffer capacity in order to satisfy both the Cell Loss Probability (CLP) and the cell delay time (CDT) of the source with measured or contracted traffic parameter of mean cell rate and its variance. Finally. we will present the result of the numerical computation and disscuss the implication of the result.
