Garden is one of the most noteworthy spaces in the world of traditional Chinese literature. It was very closely related to the life of literati in traditional China. The literati in traditional China consciously or unconsciously choose to live in their garden when they were frustrated in the official careers. The characteristic of garden in traditonal China is somewhere between entering into an official career and a life in seclusion.
There are three types of garden in traditional Chinese culture : emperor's garden, private garden, and temple garden. Among them, the private garden first appeared in Han dynasty and spread in Song dynasty. However, it was in late Ming and early Qing dynasty when construction of garden became popular.
From the middle of Ming dynasty, economy has developed rapidly. The development of economy became a foundation of the flourishment of construction of garden at that time. And the status of the merchandise class rose to that of the literati. In addition, the power of emperor strengthened and the eunuch gained the power much more than the literati. Therefore, the literati questioned their traditional roles and their identities as subjects and confucian intellectuals. As a result, they needed an alternative life. which was the life in the garden.
Pursuing the aesthetic lives-composing the poem, drinking, collecting the antique, they lived in the garden. Composing the poem was the most important activity. By remembering the moment of gathering of the previous literati and composing the poem, the literati could experience lyric moments as they did. Garden in late Ming and early Qing dynasty was a kind of node to connect the present with the past in terms of time and to let the literati to be able to keep their elegant life from prosaic circumstance in terms of space.
