데이타 모델링은 데이타베이스 설계시 아주 중요한 단계이다. 지리 정보 시스템과 같이 복잡하고 다양한 데이타를 다루는 응용의 설계에는 특히 객체 지향 접근 방법이 많은 장점을 가지고 있다고 알려져 있다. 이 논문에서는 지리 정보 시스템에서 다루게 되는 공간 데이타의 특징을 설명하고 이런 공간 데이타를 모델링하는 데 있어 객체지향 데이타 모델의 장점을 알아본다. 이 논문은 또한 공간 객체를 위한 일반적인 객체지향 데이타 모델을 OMT기법을 이용하여 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제시된 모델에서는 래스터 객체를 벡터객체와 함께 모델링하였으며 점, 선, 면의 위상관계를 제공한다.
