가솔린 연료를 사용하여 점화시킨 엔진에서 배출되는 오염물짙(타지않은 탄화수소, 질소산화물, 일산화탄소)을 제거하기 위해서 사용되는 효율성이 높은 촉매 작용에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 연료와 윤활유의 첨가제로 쓰이는 납, 망간, 인이 촉매에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 납과 망간은 촉매의 활성화를 감소시키고 주위환경에 유해하므로 사용량을 최소한으로 감소시켜야 한다. 촉매의 활성화를 감소시키는 인(윤활제의 첨가제)은 적당한 촉매를 사용하여 제거시킬 수 있다. 오염물질의 양을 조절 하는데 사용되는 자동차 촉매로는 백금족 금속을 함유하는 물질이 가장 좋다.
