Kim Dong-ri was not only a eminent novelist but a critic in the history of Korean Literature. Kim Dong-ri, as a novelist showing consistent interest in the general destiny of human beings which was descended to every mankind in spite of different times and circumstances, tried to describe the dual aspects of human life. In other words, both the problems of transcendental parts of human life and the earthly parts of life are his important concerns.
After the liberation of Korea, he changed his view of literature which emphasized ‘Pure Literature' on the basis of humanism into 'National Literature'. During the period, Kim Dong-ri showed strong will to take part in real circumstances through the literary arguments with leftists writers. As he thought it important for a man to have a voluntary movement, he had a instinctive hatred to communist who did believe the materialistic conception of the world.
In the middle of argument, he prescribed modern humanism based on democracy as 'The Third Humanism', which could be a certain foundation of world literature as national literature. In his opinion, the characteristics of 'The Third Humanism' were nationality, cosmopolitanism and perpetuity. The literary theory of Kim dong-ri's 'Pure lierature', 'National literature' and 'The Third Humanism' are connected with one another.
Kim Dong-ri tried to concrete his view of literature in the form of novel. He tried to describe his concerns of national circumstances in his novel.『The Cross of Saban』was the novel expressed his 'Third Humanism'. The novels of『The Cross of Saban』paid attention to the salvation of all mankind. In advocating 'The Third Humanism', he chose Saban as a hero before Jesus Christ in his novel, because he want to save his nation oppressed by Japanese Imperialism.
Saban was adopted as a hero who save his nation in earthly life and Jesus Christ was chosen as a important character who was to symbolize heavenly salvation. Though Kim Dong-ri challenged the province of God to seek after the salvation of mankind, he didn't reach satisfactory result. Both Saban and Jesus Christ were not the characters who realized the Third Humanism. It was Hadat, hiden character that Kim dong-ri symbolized as a real hero who can realize his third humanism. As a spiritual supporter of Saban, Hadat, horoscoper, was born in Orient. He was the very man that showed literary characteristics of Kim dong-ri's humanism.

Eventually the insistence on humanism of Kim Dong-ri was expressed in accomodation of destiny and attached to Shamanism. He wanted to express the mysterious power of destiny which controls human life. Destiny was recognized as a kind of problem imposed on mankind in the part of beyond man's power.
