The sustainability of a building has been discussed with reference to use of building materials and the corresponding embodied energy as well as with respect to the energy needed for heating and cooling of building and the respective equivalent green house gas emissions. Specific case of India has been discussed with six climatic zones sufficient to encompass the varying climatic parameters all over the country. It has been seen that by using insulating material over the roof and walls, the cooling/heating energy can be reduced by nearly 70% of the energy used in traditionally built air-conditioned buildings in India. The embodied energy in the process increases only marginally. The largest contribution to the embodied energy comes from the use of steel. Since the materials manufacture as well as the cooling/heating energy use lead to environmental emissions leading to global warming, an index has been developed for defining a green building. The index would have a minimum value of 1.0 and a maximum of 1.5 for buildings to be qualified as green. This has been demonstrated for an office building in a hot and dry region of India.
