In this investigation, the photocatalytic degradation effect of sol-gel TiO₂thin film on gaseous formaldehyde was tested experimentally. The tests were conducted with both artificial UVA and solar radiation. In the parametric data analysis, an empirical-correlation equation was obtained to express the reactant residue as a function of the irradiance and exposure time. It was found that the sol-gel TiO₂thin film had a lower apparent photonic efficiency of photocatalysis than a Degussa P25 TiO₂coating. However, in terms of the photonic efficiency that counted only the absorbed and scattered photons as the consumption, the sol-gel TiO₂thin film performed at a higher efficiency. The transmitted photons could be used to activate any subsequent thin-film layers of a photo reactor. The results demonstrate the significance of the sol-gel TiO₂thin film/glass substrate module for air purification. The photocatalytic characteristics found are essential for designing a honeycomb-type photo reactor that works with external source of photons. The photo reactor can certainly facilitate the utilization of solar energy.
