Recent development in international oil market and public awareness of sustainable development require energy efficient and environment-conscious alternative in architectural practice. It is urgently important in building sector to disseminate ideas and technology which conserve energy and resources, protect natural environment, enhance quality of life, and consequently lessen economic burden. A greenhouse which is made of glass structure inherently has poor insulation value. and is generally used for cultivation of plant. However, there are many situations where a greenhouse is used as a multi-purpose space in addition to cultivation. In such cases, it consumes a considerable amount of heating and cooling energy in order to maintain comfort level for residents. This study aims to present, through a case study, design strategies for multi-purpose greenhouse which is being built in Jeju-do Province. Emphases are placed on energy conservation and preservation of regional environment which is unique in Korea due to its island location. Building energy loads for various alternative design solutions are examined, and a systematic design solution which ensure effective energy conservation is suggested.
