This article examines the identity of the Communards and the principle of association in the Paris Commune of 1871. The identity of the Communards was inherited by the revolutionary traditions, and also developed by the socioeconomic conditions of Paris after the 1860s. Each of the Communards participated actively in the construction of a new republic through the Commune as a citoyen/ citoyenne. Under the Commune they exercised rights and duties which citoyen/citoyenne of the republic had in the revolutionary traditions. This exercise of the citizenship appeared as a private behavior of citoyen/citoyenne, but each citoyen/citoyenne gave public quality to his/her behavior by means of various associations. All of them associated with one another on each level of the Commune, and they considered the associations as the foundation of a new republic. The fact that the Communards participated actively in the development of a new republic created a new history distinguished from the previous one. Therefore the Paris Commune of 1871 is a rare case in history in that the Communards attempted to reorganize a society by means of free associations.
