Information technology of today has made it possible to overcome the barrier of geographical limitation and share various kinds of cultural contents through the internet. However, the majority of digitalized cultural contents disproportionately depend on western countries still.
Asian countries need to develop their digital environment to provide cultural information in order to promote their national image and mutual understanding of Asian civilization.
The goal of this research project is to design a roadmap to promote collaborative digitalization of Asian cultural heritage, for the purpose of contributing toward Asian people's mutual understanding of Asian culture.
The researchers of this project organized an expert group consisting of professionals in history, culture, and information technology from various Asian countries to conduct a survey on digitalization of cultural heritage. We collected information about the current status of representative cultural heritage and related digitalization projects in each Asian country - plans, problems, and solutions; and designed an initiative program - a roadmap to promote collaborative digitalization projects in Asian countries, including standardization and education activities related to digitalization of cultural heritage.
Diverse recommendations collected from Korean and overseas professionals during this project have been organized into a draft on "International Collaboration Program for Digitalization of Asian Cultural Heritage" for use as a guideline for future projects.
