Lee Joung Bo was known as one of the most famous sijo poets of the late Chosun dynasty. He composed about one-hundred pieces of sijo throughout his life. His sijos differ from the sijos of other poets of his time in terms of variety, elegance and reality. These characteristics were based on his individual and social backgrounds.
Lee Joung Bo's sijos are various in form, material, theme and persona. Confucian scholars usually liked to compose short form sijos only during his time. But Lee Joung Bo composed both short form sijos and long form sijos. In his sijos, he addressed many different themes such as love, nature, caution, loyalty, integrity, reminiscence of history, and people's daily lives. He employed many different kinds of persona in order to express these various themes more effectively.
The elegance of Lee Joung Bo's sijos ranges from the traditional to amusements. The traditional explores themes of Confucianism such as one sided-love, enjoyment of nature, loyalty and integrity. Amusements concern relative love, the enjoyment of drinking and sex, and cultural phenomena of the time. In his exploration of amusements, Lee Joung Bo differed from the other Confucian scholars of his time, who clung to the traditional.
The variety and elegance of Lee Joung Bo's sijos were based on the reality of his time, or, in other words, both Lee Joung Bo's individual and social backgrounds. The variety of his sijos stemmed from his social environment, while the elegance stemmed from private environment, but the reality of his sijo stemmed from both his social environment and private environment.
The varied content of Lee Joung Bo's sijo's-ranging from traditional characteristics to amusements, and employing many different personas-was an expression of modernity which can be seen in the work of modern poets today.
