The present situation towards the definition and solution of the CFC-related problem facing the refrigeration industry is addressed. A historical sketch of the development of refrigerants is presented. A review of the problem in the context of atmospheric dynamics leading to ozone depletion and compounding of the greenhouse effect helps to define the challenge facing the industry. This is related to the present utilization levels of various refrigerants.
There are boundary conditions placed upon a solution. These include the Montreal Protocol and the recent London revisions to the Montreal Protocol. A description of ASHRAE's present position in relationship to the CFC challenge is also given.
