Margaret Edson's Wit reveals a subversive paradigm of thought, disclosing the "ironic significance" of the female body. The dichotomy of body and soul and the concept of the body's inferiority to the soul have a long history in Western tradition. The play discloses the dysfunction of the mind through the image of the body with a terminal disease. In addition, the play delineates the body as the embodiment of immortality. Subverting the paradigm of the Cartesian dualism of mind and body, it highlights the importance of the body with subjectivity and insinuates the nature of unfeigned and appropriate wit.
The image of Vivian's body not only debunks the incongruous and imperfect wits that make erroneous judgments but also embodies the metaphysical yearning for immortality. Vivian's ailing body symbolizes the dysfunctional wit. Her body in the terminal phase of the disease ultimately functions as a metaphoric locus in which the wits of three worlds/bodies interrelatedly contest their problematic, incongruous nature: Vivian's wit in her life, the wit of Donne's Holy Sonnets, and the wit of the medical world which treats Vivian's ovarian cancer. Metaphysical yearning for immortality is embodied in Vivian's naked body after her death.
To avoid "an error in judgment," unfeigned and appropriate wit should keep the ability to embrace the flexibilities of perspectives, showing humanity and humility. To accept the perspectives of the other consists as a basis of humanity, making holistic relationships with the other. The play also illuminates that humility can only be attained by discarding one's blind arrogance in the perception of oneself. Simultaneously, in the process of debunking the nature of malfunctioning wits and through questioning the nature of the unfeigned and appropriate wit, the play illuminates the inevitable limits of the intriguing roles of the author and the reader/audience. In postmodern society the play silently asserts that mind and body are not separated, insinuating the weight of redemption.
