There are two purposes in this research. Firstly, it is to prove that modern architecture is not a new one that is discontinued from the past architectural tradition but the one connected with the previous architecture as is shown from the statement of modern architecture. Secondly, it is to induce the features of the spatial continuity in modern architecture, which is also effective in contemporary architecture, and to prepare theoretical foundation that enable us to apply such features to contemporary architecture.
The results of this study induced from this review are as follows. Firstly, modern architecture does not mean the historic discontinuity from the past. It is rather associated with the history in light of the pursuit of spatial continuity and has historical continuance throughout history including modern architecture. Secondly, spatial continuity had been emphasized through the control and integration of structural and decorative elements prior to the modern architecture period, whereas various expressions of spatial continuity have been possible because of the development of new technology and material since the modern architecture period. Lastly, the boundary becomes obscure due to the superposition of the spaces. The spaces become mutually integrated and create continuous spaces. By the superposition of the layers created by diverse architectural elements, there appears an obscurity between spaces, and consequently, it becomes possible to secure spatial continuity. In this research, I tried to prove that many architects have pursued spatial continuity throughout history as a main theme and architectural history might be understandable through this theme.
