As we embrace the 21st century, Information technology(IT) is accompanied by the inflows of vast amount of terms to each country. As a result, a huge confusion has been caused in the acceptance system of the words of foreign origin. In this regard, this research analyzed linguistic characters of IT-related terms used in the daily newspapers of Korea, China and Japan (Chosun Ilbo, Renmin Ribao, and Yomiuri Shinbun) from January 1, 2005 through January 31, 2005. The linguistic and social and cultural characteristics and differences of the abovementioned three countries were compared, and the problems arising from the acceptance of the words of foreign origin were diagnosed as follows:
1) As for individual number of vocabulary of IT terms with foreign origin, Japan has three to four times more than Korea and China. This implies that Japan's ubiquitous environmental creation, and sharing and popularization of information are relatively higher than Korea and China.
2) The terms in the areas of IT and information society, and hi-tech were remarkably used in Korea and Japan, while the terms within the category of computer and Internet were conspicuously used in China. From this, the socially and culturally interested fields of the three countries were identified through comparison.
3) China had two times more total vocabularies than Korea and Japan, and had the highest ratio at 45% in terms of top 10 vocabularies by frequency.
4) Japan had 16 words in the dual form example of the IT words of foreign origin, which overwhelmed Korea and China.
5) Looking into word composition, Korea and Japan had very high ratio of compound words. Especially, Japan had high ratio of partially cut form of words, and high use ratio of derivative words.
6) In terms of languages, Japan, Korea and China used English and mixed languages in order. Acronym use rates rapidly increased in Korea, China and Japan, which led to a concern that information sharing between societal members could be difficult.
As a result of this research, the three countries’ linguistic characteristics and social and cultural differences were investigated. In terms of indication of IT-related terms with foreign origin, it was confirmed that confusion in the existing system was brought about to all the three countries. In view of this, we actively need to organize an expert organization, and seek to control the use of terms and pursue a possibility to unify the terms used in Korea, China, and Japan.
