Traditional residential architecture of Korea have been studied as if they were the development within the boundary of Korean peninsula. However, traditional houses are local development under the interactive influence between the neighboring regions. This study aims to identify the pattern of development of traditional houses of Hezhe tribe, northeastern China, which is known to have close racial relationship with Korean people. The study was carried through both field research and examination of written texts. The most primitive type was cone shaped hut, which was continued by underground house for winter, and wooden houses for summer. After these examples, above ground timber house appeared, which again, were followed by Chinese style rectangular houses that are most popular these days. Such flow of development help us understand the development of Korean residential architecture because they share common traces of similar evolution.
