Bramante’s 〈Tempietto〉 of S. Pietro in Montorio in Rome, and epitome example of the Cinquecento Renaissance classicism is a peripteral rotunda built on the traditional site of the martyrdom of the apostle Peter. The rotunda in itself was not an entirely new conception : circular buildings had existed in the Quattrocento. To cite one, Brunelleschi’s S. Maria degli Angeli of 1436 in Florence comes first to our mind. But the 〈Tempietto〉 is the first Renaissance building in which the circular cella is surrounded in the ancient classical manner by a peripteral colonnade bearing an architrave. Most Renaissance architectural historians agree that Bramante revived and in part transformed the round peripteral temple of antiquity and then, guided by the logic of geometry based on circle, created the concentric courtyard. Undoubtedly the uniqueness of the 〈Tempietto〉 and its courtyard has been accepted as a measure of the artist’s capacity to create a new form suited to the unusual purpose of the structure, i.e., a memorial-martyrium. However, the unusual purpose must not be taken as sufficient reason for the unique form. The ideal perfection of the total design forces us to suspect that specific architectural precedents rather than the ancient prototype contributed by which Bramante conceived the 〈Tempietto〉 and its concentric courtyard.
Bramante’s original project of 〈Tempietto〉 which is known to us by Serlio’s woodcuts and Palladio’s similar rendition is different from the present building, in that the original concentric courtyard with colonnade has never been carried out. It is thus imperative to reconstruct Bramante’s intention of the original/final design before embarking on the search for architectural models. This paper also deals with the iconography of circle and the concept of idea, church in view of the theoretical writings of Alberti-Laurana circle which must have inspired Bramante when he designed the 〈Tempietto〉.
