This study investigates the patterns of unpaid work at home for the middle aged. Focusing on domestic chores and care of family members, the study compares rates and amounts of time used for such activities between men and women. Data from 'Time Use Survey' conducted by the Korea National Statistical Office in 1999 are analyzed under the assumption that the rates and amounts of time for unpaid work at home would differ by the characteristics of the individual, household, residental area and surveyed day. The results show that, while the rates of doing domestic chores are considerably different by the given characteristics among the middle aged men, there are no substantial difference among the middle aged women. The amount of time used for domestic chores are negatively related to the number of household members among women, but this is not the case for men. As for the care of family members, household composition appears most important, Currently married women are more likely to participate in such care and spend more time than currently unmarried women. However, such difference by marital status is not found among men.
