The present study is a basic research on 'Shim Roon'(심훈) who engaged in various cultural activities from poetry to novels, dramas, plays, film criticism, movie direction and arrangement in the 1920s. It purposed to identify problems in methods of research on 'Shim Hoon' and to expand the domain of research on the writer beyond fragmentary research concentrated on 『Evergreen Tree』(『상록수』)and 「If the Day Comes」.(「그날이 오면」)
Basic problems in research on 'Shim Roan’s' literature are as follows.
First, compared to his various cultural activities, research on him has been focused on limited areas. Thus it is necessary to comprehend his whole activities.
Second, his relation with ‘KAPF’ and ‘YEOMGUNSA’(염군사) and his roles in literary organizations should be investigated to confirm his influence in literary circles.
Third, there must be thorough interpretation of his works from an aesthetic viewpoint and it should be accompanied with qualitative research with in depth analysis on selected texts.
Besides the three problems, his activities in China should also be explained. Fragmentary research on ‘Shim Hoon’ obstructs a balanced view. In research on a writer, how to reveal the individual, approach method and the relation between the writer and his works are important subjects to be studied. Thus, this study examined the writer’s life and his literature, his relation with ‘YEOMGUNSA(염군사)’, and problems in research on his poems. In addition, based on the results of this research, we suggest the necessity of expanding research on ‘Shim Hoon’.
