In this article, the Three dynasties’ responses toward Chinese Sui and Tang dynasties’ Eastern policies are examined. Their responses will also be compared with each other. Especially, certain factors, such as the situations those three dynasties were going through at the time, or the historical experiences those dynasties had been accumulating during the 5th and 6th centuries, which would have undoubtedly effected their responses to the Chinese policies, will be examined as well.
Nearing the end of the era of Northern and Southern Dynasty Leagues, China became more and more centralized, and such changes effected the forms of the appointment titles that the Chinese government had been handing out to nearby regions. Titles like General(‘Janggun/將軍’) or Dodok Jaegunsa/都督諸軍事, which were used in bestowals granting local personnel the independent authority over outskirt regions, were dropped from being used. In the meantime, entities like Hungwan/勳官(elderly statesmen) and other bestowed titles(Jakho/爵號), which were symbols of the Sino-central protocols, were elevated. Chinese dynasties like Sui and Tang started to bestow these appointment titles, in their efforts of establishing a new world order, with China at the center.
During the Sui dynasty period, the appointment titles were bestowed to the kings of the three dynasties, and during the Tang dynasty period those titles were bestowed to the heads of independent political entities. Kings of the Koguryo dynasty received appointment titles which were titles that inherited the tradition of past titles such as Gun-gong-ho/郡公號(title for the Gun/郡 lord) and Bonguk Wang-ho/本國王號(Royal title for the country head). Kings of the Baekje and Shilla dynasties also received similar appointment titles. What should be noted, is that although Sui and Tang dynasties were trying to establish a Sino-centric world order by giving out all these titles, the three dynasties of the Korean peninsula seem to have been responding based upon the traditional perception they had earlier had toward China.
In fact, Koguryo maintained its foreign policy based upon its own view of the international order and its own experience of already establishing an independent power block in East Asia. And Baekje continued its efforts of On the other hand, in comparison Shilla lacked such international experience, and instead chose to cooperate with Sui or Tang, therefore pursuing a foreign policy that was fairly different from those of Koguryo and Baekje. From this, we can see that the historical experiences the three dynasties were having during the 5th and 6th centuries did effect their foreign policies in the late 6th century, and their responses to the Eastern policies of the Sui and Tang dynasties as well.
