〈Wolbonggi(月峯記)〉 is an ‘adapted and created novel’. This work is a novel adapted and created from a Chinese short story of the Ming Dynasty, 〈Sojihyunrasamjaihap(蘇知縣羅衫再合)〉. This work is different from the other adapted novels in terms of only the opening part of the story being adapted from 〈Sojihyunrasamjaihap〉 and the rest of the story being created and added to the original Chinese one.
〈Gangneungchuwoljeon(江陵秋月傳)〉 has some of topics in common with 〈Sojihyunrasamjaihap〉 and 〈Wolbonggi〉. However, 〈Gangneungchuwoljeon〉 does not accept the same story just as the opening part of 〈Wolbonggi〉 does. The work accepts stories with precise alteration according to the composition of the entire work and the developmental phases of the story.
It is more desirable to regard the acceptance of common motif revealed in 〈Gangneungchuwoljeon〉 not as an approach from the perspective of adaptation but as a result of intertextuality or pastiche among 〈Sojihyunrasamjaihap〉, 〈Wolbonggi〉, and 〈Gangneungchuwoljeon〉. Therefore, as I think of 〈Wolbonggi〉 as an ‘adapted and created novel’, the character of 〈Gangneungchuwoljeon〉 also needs to be newly discovered. This study finds that 〈Gangneungchuwoljeon〉 is a creative writing under no influence of Chinese novels.
One of 〈Gangneungchuwoljeon〉’s writing styles is the acceptance of Gasa style(歌辭體). This means that the work is a Boudoir novel(閨房小說) mostly read among female readers in women’s quarters. Moreover, 〈Gangneungchuwoljeon〉 contains the characteristics of Gibong novels(奇逢小說), Gundam novels(軍談小說), Jeokgang novels(謫降小說), and Gamun novels(家門小說). These distinctive qualities show that 〈Gangneungchuwoljeon〉 has the aspects of a Chinese classical novel becoming a Korean classical novel and the originality of literary works.
