Mokpo is one of the modern cities, where the western stone architecture had been introduced during the early 20th century. There are many kinds of the stone buildings, which consist of the government buildings, bank, school, hospital, police station, and church etc. The local tuff were the chief material for the stone architecture of this area. Enough stone materials were produced in the local minds of this region. The main architects were Japanese, and the stone masons were mainly Chinese. Since the independent of 1945, Korean architect and the native stone masons begun to develop their own architectural design and constructional methods following the tradition of the Japanese colonial architecture.
Over a dozen of the stone buildings constructed by Korean after the independent could classified into two main types, i.e. Mokpo Kyungdong church and Mokpo Sabeom college. The first type is a local version of the earlier architecture of the Japanese colony, where as the later type is a unique invention of the local architects. These stone architectures of the post-independent have not received a close analysis, and the conservation of the buildings have not been properly preserved so far.
The present paper is to study the stone architectures, built during 1945-60s. A special focus is made on the mason technique and constructional method of the stone structure. The study is carried out with the historical documents and the scientific analysis of the present buildings.
