The purpose of this study is concerned with analyze the impacts of the Kwangyang Iron and Steel Co.(KSCO) to the regional growth of Kwangyang Region. In order to analyze the spread effects of the KSCO on the regional growth of Kwangyang region, shift-share analysis and regional growth rate diffenential analysis were carried out.
With the location of the KSCO in Kwangyang region, population in Kwangyang region has changed from 78, 696 people in 1980 to 155,558 in 1990. On the other hand, total employment in formal sector has grown from 11,442 workers to 40,321 workers in 1988. Total production output of industry has changed from 2,279 million won in 1983 to 8,984 million won in 1989.
The result of shift-share analysis and regional growth rate diffenential analysis shows that the location of KSCO has a influence upon the change of regional employment and industrial structure in the Kwangyang region. The major industries of employment generation were manufacturing, construction, and other servies. Particularly, the sectors of manufacturing and construction have a influence upon the change of regional industrialization and urbanization.
As a result, the estabilishment and location of industial complex including the KSCO have a effect on the progress of regional urbanization and industrialization. Therefore, The economic effects of the KSCO provide regional growth of the Kwnagyang region.
