Cities have essentially the purpose to provide an organic and creative environment for people to live in.
A city which has great diversity generates the maximum of interaction and works the minimum of conflict effectively between people and their surroundings. As a physical expression a city is a thing that is seen, and since the visual sense is a channel to the mind, that which is seen should be as beautiful as man can make it. A city must work properly and be economically sound, but also give pleasure to those who look at it ; the technical solution of the functional problems must be fused with aesthetic feeling.
Streetscape is an important factor of cityscape, and buildings faced to the street should represent the character of city.
When buildings faced to the street are functional as well as satisfied in appearance, buildings are in harmony with each other. The streetscape should be beautiful and maintain its continuity which is the character of the streetscape. To maintain the character of streetscape, we consider the visual perception of streetscape.
The analysis of the correlation obtains formulas between the result of factor analysis on the characteristics of streetscape and physical quantity-analysis by means of using questionnaire. Street space is composed of various elements, but this study deals only with street-side buildings, trees and signboards.
This study reports on the visual evaluation for the streetscape in C.B.D, and clarifies the relation between the characteristics of streetscape and street space elements.
