The fundamental difference in the pattern of cities is marked by two transitional periods. The developments from a salve to a merchantile economy and from slingshot to gunpowder warfare. Two basic forms are discernible; the walled town and the open city.
Korea faced frequent attacks from neighboring countries and often could not adequately defend itself. As a result, each capital of an certain era was located on irregular terrain located on hilltops or riversides and was surrounded by a protective wall.
The purpose of this study is to discover the some peculiarities of characteristics concerning the location of these walled cities in Korea, their inner spatial patterns and their development process.
The results of this study are as follows;
1) Capital towns were located almost on the inner area of the Han Peninsula, but local castle towns were spread along the seaside area for defence from the attacking forces as seen in Table 1 and Figure 1.
2) According to this resarch, the construction of local castle towns in our country was not begun in the Yi Dynasty but in the Silla Kingdom.
3) Site selections of the capital towns or the allocations of main public buildings such as palaces, ancestral mausoleums of main gates were designed to fit the topographic features based on the Pungsu Theory (風水地理說), a city planning principle used in the Koryo and Yi Dynasties, local castle cities however, did not seem to apply this theory.
4) In general, the plan of the castle wall, the former was almost round-or full moon-shape and the latter was planned the geometrical square.
5) The main roads within the walls of capital cities were wide and straight on an east-west axis, namely from the east gate to the west gate, and sub main streets linked up with this road perpendicularly. However, many local capital towns were based on a regular grid pattern-“+”cross type -. It was due to used of the 「Jeongjeon」( 井田法) is one of the technique for land subdivision from Chinese. Additionally, it was almost the same as at present time as we can see in many Figures in this paper.
