This paper focuses on fuel economy improvement according to types of power steering system. Usually, conventional power steering system is directly driven by the crankshaft of engine with belt. But there's some inefficiency in high engine speed range. To improve this inefficiency automobile makers develops new power steering systems, a motor driven hydraulic power steering system and a full electric power steering system. However there's insufficient study about effects of type of power steering system on fuel economy. In this paper, researches are performed on effect of type of power steering system on fuel economy by experiment. And it is also calculated the effect on vehicle fuel economy using computer simulation with AVL cruise software. As a result, 1% of vehicle fuel economy improvement can be achieved in a vehicle with motor driven hydraulic power steering system compared to a vehicle with conventional power steering system. In addition 1.7% of vehicle fuel economy improvement can be achieved using full electric power steering system in LA-4 mode. These results could be used to choose a power steering system on the focus of interest.
