The folksongs occupy a large part of Korean folk music. In Korea, the folk music that enjoys freedom and frankness is treated against the classic music that keeps of neutralization and abstinence.
I picked up 3 pieces for this paper. 〈Ex.1〉 is a fishing song of Soheuksan Island, Jeonnam Province. 〈Ex.2〉 is a song sung when weeding a rice paddy in a basin of the river Yeongsan. 〈Ex.3〉 is a kind of funeral song sung when carrying a bier in Buyeo district.
The artistic character of 〈Ex.1〉 is shown with an order found in a little intricate form. The first 12 measures constitute of 1 patteren. There are two kinds of chorus part : the short one (어이기야) and the long one (어이야~어 아아아~).
〈Ex.2>has a wide singing range and two kinds of chorus part(①암 그렇고말고, ②아리시구나…). The meaning of ① is "Oh, yes" and it is sung in the style of recitative. '아리시구나'(Arisiguna), a kind of an exclamational word is the beginning word of the second chorus part which has a long and melodic flow. The solo part(메) of this piece is composed of the melodies repeated with a tension and a relaxation. The fact that the decedents of the society used the special coffins of two large earthenware vessels with a wide mouth, made before A.D 6 C. composed this form addes its beauty.
〈Ex.3〉 is composed of duple rhythm that is rare in Korean traditional folksong examples, and is a refreshing piece.
These 3 pieces already lost their original function sung in the relation with work. So their artificial character became decrescent. But, we can and must sublimate them as a stage art.
