Literature is a spiritual accomplishment including lives of the times. and poetry is the core of the very sensitive field.
The fact that modern Korean poetry started based on sea indicates our modernism is closely related to the new awareness about sea.
The sea, a specific area, has continuously been selected as themes of poetry, which means it is associated with the phase of the times beyond individuals.
This article treats sea-image in terms with both social consciousness and internal one. In introduction, this article goes over existing studies.
And in two main discourses, at first I see it as the road to new world, historical spot and the warning to the civilization and then as a world of recollection, a place of revival and symbol of holiness as internal consciousness.
In modern Korean poetry, sea has a social meaning, which means the road to the new world, that is to say, western civilization.
For example, in Choi nam-sun’s poems, sea is presented as means to realize enlightenment ideal. Im hwa and Jung ji-yong view sea as a road to accept new civilization based on their experiences through visiting Japan.
Sim hoon, a resistant poet, treats sea as a symbolic space to be able to express his anger to Japan’s colonialism to Korea.
Kim jong-sam looks upon it as a space to symbolize the tragic division of Korea and Ahn soo-hwan’s sea is full of rage resulting from the very division.
Kim kwang-sup sees it as a scene of environment destruction and Yi seang-jin expresses woman diver’s suffering from the sea to survive.
Kim ki-rim and Jung ji-yong sing a symbol of retrospection like a fairy tale in their poems. Shin suk-jung’s sea is expressed as a utopia based on Taoism.
Jonah complex is in the sea, in other words, sea is the place where death lives with revival.
In Seo jung-joo’s poem, sea is the place to meet ghosts and in Park jea-sam’s sea evokes the image of anyma as an elder sister.
Kim nam-jo’s sea is treated as a space to give strength to live a new life through the purifying function of water.
Sea is viewed as a holy space of hierophany and so Park doo-jin and Kim jong-jea view sea as a place where mithical addidents are happening on and on.
As mentioned above, the sea-image has various and a lot of meanings in Korean poetry like a spectrum. Sea is full of vivid life, waves of history and a host of hopes.
Sea reveals itself as a place where we hope that many mithical and sacred things will take place repeatedly.
